A thunderstorm can bring intense rain, strong gusts, falling branches, wind-blown debris and sometimes hail within minutes. When a car is parked outdoors, the priority is to anticipate the event and choose suitable protection without expecting a standard textile cover to replace a shelter.
These are the practical steps that can help limit risk before, during and after a storm.
1. A covered parking space remains the best protection
If hail is forecast, park the car in a garage, under a solid shelter or in an underground car park whenever possible. This is the most effective way to protect it from impacts.
Avoid parking beneath trees, near objects that could fall or in areas exposed to surface water. Close the windows and sunroof, and make sure nothing is resting on or immediately beside the vehicle.
2. Can a standard car cover protect against hail?

4. Consider the wind before fitting a cover
The car and the inside of the cover should be clean and as dry as possible before fitting. Particles trapped between the fabric and paintwork can cause friction.
Use all the supplied fastenings and make sure the size suits the vehicle. If gusts exceed normal conditions of use or could displace the cover, choose sheltered parking and follow the product instructions. A poorly secured cover can flap against the bodywork or come loose.
5. What should you check after a storm?
- Wait until conditions are safe before approaching the vehicle.
- Remove the cover progressively and allow it to dry before storage.
- Inspect the windscreen, roof, bonnet and other glass panels.
- Check that no branch or debris is trapped against the bodywork.
- If damage is found, take photographs promptly and contact your insurer.
